My City Is...: busy busy

I've decided that, since I don't use LJ enough anymore to merit the expense, I'm dropping my paid account. It doesn't mean I'm going to stop posting here entirely; I just don't need all the extras anymore.

I actually do most of my updating on Facebook, so if any of you aren't my friend already there, go ahead and add me if you want. I'm listed there as "W Dale Pawley", and I'm in the Las Cruces, New Mexico network. And if I don't know you by your real name from here, go ahead and leave me a note telling me who you are. LOL.

So, I was watching Reaper tonight, and this commercial for a new movie that's coming out came on. There was a guy in the commercial who just made me start drooling on sight. I was going, "Oh. My. God. Who IS that hunk?" He looked familiar, but I really could not place him.

It was Seth Rogen.

Seth. Freaking. Rogen.

Dude.

Way to get hot, all of a sudden.

We discovered that Jon's cell phone uses the same kind of battery as mine.

Which means that I can slip my battery into Jon's phone, recharge it there, then put it back into my phone.

Not the most desirable solution, but it keeps my phone alive until I can afford to get a new one.

Dearly beloved, we gather here to say our goodbyes...(Dies irae, dies illa)...

My City Is...: sad sad

My cell phone is dying.

The connection where you plug it in to recharge it has broken, so it is impossible to ever recharge the battery again. I could get it fixed, but the cost is such that I might as well just buy a new phone.

And either way, neither of those options is an option at this point, at least until I get my next paycheck on the 16th.

It's like watching someone die of some wasting disease. It's down to one bar of power now, and I'm just waiting for that little tiny bit of energy to drain away and the phone to die completely.

I guess this is goodbye, old pal.

I finally hooked up our digital converter box today. We get a few more channels, most of them Spanish stations (one of the joys of living in southern New Mexico). We do get one extra PBS station, a local weather channel, and Retro Programming Network, which shows a shitload of old t.v. shows (I got to watch The Hardy Boys with Shaun Cassidy and Parker Stevenson for the first time in AGES!). Plus, now all of our local stations come in crystal clear, which means no having to tilt my head and squint to see through the fuzzy picture and double images when watching LOST.

But the best part? Channel 7.2, which is, as it turns out...THE CW!!! Which means, starting in March? NEW SEASON OF REAPER!!!!

I'm absolutely grunting and twitching with joy today.

Fanfiction question:

My City Is...: optimistic optimistic

Not that it really matters, because I'm going to (probably) write it anyway, but...

Can it be called "Slash" if the male/male coupling you're writing about is actually canon? Or does it have to be a non-canon coupling to be properly called Slash? Does it then fall into the realm of regular, ordinary, run-of-the-mill fanfiction?

Either way, I've finished Season 1 of Reaper, and I plan to have a lot of delightful fun with Tony and Steve.

What fictional high school—from tv, film, or a book—would you most like to attend? Or would you rather never go near high school again, fictional or otherwise?

Heartsville High, from Zanna, Don't!, would be, like, the perfect high school atmosphere for me. I mean, hey, not only would I actually have a chance at being normal, but there would be this cool guy running around with absolutely nothing to do but hook me up with someone.

If I was madly in love with Neil Patrick Harris before, that goes double after last night's SNL. Sure, it was an uneven episode (can anybody tell me what was the point of the crossdressing/flight control skit?), but it was totally worth it for the first few skits (Rachel Maddow? Genius!), and I think NPH's part of the Hoda/Kathie Lee skit gave me a few little orgasms.

Wow. Seems like my flist has been pretty inactive today. Since checking things out last night, I've only gotten about eight new posts on my friends' page, and most of those were feeds. Sounds like everyone's busy in the *shudder* real world.

Me, too...sorta. Jon and I had to go to Bob's house so Jon could find hid dad's crutches. Seems Bob's knee went out on him last night and he was having trouble getting from the bed to the bathroom, much less down the hall to the closet where he keeps the crutches. Then I brought Jon home and went out to Wal-Mart to spend the $100 gift card I got from Dad and Mary in the mail this past week.

I bought Seasons 1 & 2 of South Park; Season 1 of Reaper; a Jason Statham action/fantasy flick called In the Name of the King (the action is for Jon; the Jason is for moi); and Made of Honor for Mom. I also bought a 2GB USB Memory Stick so I can keep storing stuff.

Now I've got some steaks in the oven for dinner and we'll be settling in for DVD viewing for the night.

It was like being in the middle of an action movie...

My City Is...: awake awake
Sounds of the City: Jon playing "Tony Hawk's Proving Ground" on the XBox 360

At about 10:30 this morning, I went out to the van to go buy breakfast for the peeps here at home. I got out there, only to find that a cop car had parked itself in the middle of the street, about two houses down from ours. At the house at the end of the street (about fifty yards from where I was), there was an evidence van, and three or four guys going in and out of the house. I called Mom and Jon from my cell phone and told them to lock the doors and not answer any knocks, because I had no idea what was going down. I stayed out there, hidden in my van and watching, for about half an hour.

Finally, when I realized that all of the action was centered around that one house, and there were no cops going door to door, I thought it would probably be safe to leave. This was confirmed when one cop car showed up to relieve the first one, and the first one drove off. A couple of cars came from the other end of our street, but were turned around, with the cop telling them to drive around the block and leave our neighborhood that way. So I called Mom again, told her that I was going to go ahead and leave, and for her to call me if anything happened.

At about the time I was pulling out of my driveway and heading around the block, my friend Sherie, from Albuquerque, called me to wish me a belated Merry Christmas. I was talking to her as I drove around the block.

Then I approached the entrance to our neighborhood.

There were over a dozen cop cars grouped around there, as well as a SWAT van, a Command vehicle, an ambulance, and two fire engines. I said, "Oh, my God. I'll have to call you back."

As soon as I got past the police vehicles, I called Mom and told her to get herself and Jon ready, grab the dog, and get out of there. I told her to meet me in the parking lot of the gas station a couple of blocks away. I then called Bob and told him what was going on, and told him we'd call when Mom and Jon had joined me.

Mom and Jon and the dog eventually got there, and Mom had called a couple of news stations in El Paso to see if they could tell her what was going on. They told her that all they knew was that it was a SWAT situation involving the welfare of an individual. Jon's friend, Sky, who also lives in the same neighborhood, got his Mom on the phone with mine, and his Mom said that she had talked to one of the cops; apparently the standoff had been going on since 2 a.m. Which, WTF? We hadn't heard ANYTHING, and we live four houses away from the place where it was happening!

Anyway, we went to breakfast at Cracker Barrel, and while we were there Sky called us to let us know that it was over, the vehicles had all cleared out. So we're back home and everything's back to normal.

Well, almost normal. Gas is down to $1.16 per gallon here in town. Which has absolutely nothing to do with the SWAT situation, but still...\O/

My City Screams...

My City Is...: impressed impressed

I had to get away for a while this afternoon, so I ended up going to a matinee of Frank Miller's newest offering, The Spirit. And I have to say, I really, really liked this movie. Yes, it was cheesy, but purposely so, a fun and entertaining mix of comic book campiness and film noir.

And, I have completely fallen in love with Gabriel Macht. I've been a fan of his ever since he played Frank James in American Outlaws, and have always found him fairly attractive, but this movie...guh. I think I lost count of the number of close-ups we got of his eyes, which have to be his best feature...followed closely by the chiseled jaw and nicely muscled torso, which is displayed to good effect in a couple of scenes.

Samuel L. Jackson, playing his archenemy, The Octopus, was fantastic, playing his role to the hilt (although I don't know if all the Nazi stuff was meant to be absurdist, or if Octopus was originally meant to be played as a white guy, or what).

All in all, it was a very entertaining way to spend a couple of hours. Plus, I got to see previews of Wolverine (aka Hugh Jackman running around shirtless a lot) and The Watchmen.

All of which leads to the unveiling of my new layout. Hehehe.

And yes, I can't wait for the DVD to come out.

While waiting to see if Desperate Housewives was going to come on tonight (it was a re-run of the season opener, as it happens), Jon and I watched the last fifteen minutes of The Santa Clause 2. Being the humbug I am, I despise most Christmas movies of the feel-good genre (the most notable exception being White Christmas, which I make it a point to watch at least once if not more each year), and Tim Allen's SC movies are especially loathsome to me. (I would have liked Christmas With the Kranks if Tim and Jamie Lee had actually stuck to their guns and not given in to peer pressure from their annoying and pushy neighbors.)

Anyway, we were watching the last fifteen minutes of SC2, and when it came to the part where Tim Allen and the boy were revealing to the little girl that Tim was, indeed, Santa Claus...

I actually started getting a lump in my throat.

Now, you'll have to excuse me. I need to find a puppy to kick or a little kid to yell at.

Sounds of the City: "I Could Write Books" ~ "Zanna Don't!" OCR

I posted this on The View From the Pink Seat but thought people here would get a kick out of it too.

I've seen this list before; it was first published on Valentine's Day, 2004. But I hadn't seen it in a while, and it provides not only a host of good points, but a much-needed injection of humor into what has become a very heated, very sensitive issue.

My default userpic (the street sign with my name on it) has been replaced with some weird cartoon picture of a guy going "Ngh!" that I've never seen before, much less uploaded to my userpics.

The bitch of it is, I didn't have a copy of the street sign userpic on my computer, so now it's completely lost.

None of my other userpics seem to be affected. Can anybody explain this phenomenon?
